BUDAPEST, April 3. /TASS/. Hungary will oppose any proposals that may lead to escalation of the Ukraine conflict, a direct confrontation with Russia or pose a World War III threat, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said before heading for a two-day NATO summit in Brussels.
"In the next two days, Hungary will oppose any proposals that may lead to escalation of the hostilities in Ukraine or the imminent threat of a global war. We will not support any proposal that may bring NATO closer to war or transform NATO from the defensive alliance into an offensive one," Szijjarto said in a video address on his page on Facebook (prohibited in Russia due to its ownership by Meta, which has been designated as extremist). NATO should stick to its previous decision not to take part in the hostilities in Ukraine and avoid "a direct conflict with Russia," he underscored.
The Hungarian foreign minister said that Budapest was against hostilities in Ukraine and condemned them, and that, in any case, "it is neither a Hungarian war, nor a NATO war."
He lamented that NATO allies had been demonstrating conflicting intentions, plans and proposals that may prompt them to "cross some lines that have until recently been regarded as red."
Commenting on such plans, Szijjarto reiterated that Hungary would not support them. "Hopefully, common sense, peace and security will prevail at the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting over the next two days," he concluded.
