ATHENS, November, 14. /TASS/. Thursday night Greek police used tear-gas and stun grenades against the students protesting in the center of Athens.
Thousands of students and representatives of left movement took part in this demonstration complaining of "police violence, presence of the police inside and outside the universities, cancellation of statutory bar for entrance of law enforcement to universities, and also insertion of private security in universities".
The clashes between students and police have led to victims. A number of rioters were detained.
The protest began at the building of university administration of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Passing the Greek parliament, the protesters then went backwards to the building of the law faculty of university, where small groups of young people began to throw stones at the police. Police threw stun grenades in response. The protesters changed their direction and went towards the National Technical University of Athens which is the place of heroic students’ uprising of November 17, 1973 that was brutally oppressed by the troops of the ruling in Greece fascist junta of "black colonels".
The demonstrators attempted to enter the National Technical University of Athens, but it was closed on the orders of the rector. The special forces guarding the building used tear gas and stun grenades to prevent them from entering the building through a side entrance. Nevertheless, the students got into the yard of the university, where they are still staying.
Every year on the anniversary of the student rebellion in Greece the young people, members of left organizations and anarchists clash with police. To prevent incidents in the center of the capital and near the universities, institutes, embassies, banks and big companies about 6 thousand policemen are deployed. Their main aim is to prevent possible incidents during the upcoming 17 November traditional march of left parties representatives and also a movement to the US Embassy in protest against the USA support to military dictatorship in Greece in 1967-74. To prevent the students from seizing universities and institutes the leading higher education institutions will be closed from Wednesday to the next Tuesday by decision of the rectors.
