Putin congratulates Dmitry Chernyshenko on appointment KHL president

Chernyshenko is the former head of the Sochi Olympics organizing committee

SOCHI, November 28. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday congratulated Dmitry Chernyshenko, the former head of the Sochi Olympics organizing committee, on his appointment President of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) and thanked his predecessor, Alexander Medvedev, for his efforts to “revive ice hockey.”

“I would like to ask you to use your experience and knowledge you gained while preparing the Olympic Games in Sochi in this niche - hockey development - not only in our country but also internationally, meaning that the Kontinental Hockey League is gaining international character,” Putin said at a meeting with Chernyshenko and Medvedev.

Putin thanked Medvedev for his contribution to the development of Russian ice hockey and wished him success in his further work - in the International Hockey Federation.

Chernyshenko, 46, is CEO of the Volga Group investment company that manages assets of businessman Gennady Timchenko, who is chairman of the KHL board of directors and president of the St. Petersburg-based SKA hockey club.

The Kontinental Hockey League is an international league set up to promote ice hockey in Russia and other European and Asian states. KHL organizes matches of Russian ice hockey championship.
